  7. IconDOS is a graphical application launcher for DOS that is similiar to
  8. Window's Program Manager, complete with icons and wallpaper.  IconDOS is
  9. practical and efficient.  Zero (0) resident memory is required so
  10. launched applications are guaranteed to work the same as if run directly
  11. from DOS.  Multi-page icon menus and sub-menus provide virtually
  12. unlimited menu size.  Other features include a built-in clock, calendar,
  13. screen saver, over 450 (registered version) pre-drawn icons, 36
  14. different wallpapers and a graphical editor for producing custom icons
  15. and wallpaper.  VGA graphics is required.  A mouse is required for menu
  16. setup and editing.  After setup, IconDOS operates equally well using
  17. either keyboard or mouse.

  21. You really should read the documentation first you know.  If human
  22. nature gets the better of you, type "ICONDOS DEMO".  Try selecting an
  23. icon or two, type ALT-W to change the wallpaper, type ALT-S for a
  24. wallpaper slide show (any key stops the show).

  26. DOCUMENTATION

  28. The included documentation, ICONDOS.DOC and ICONEDIT.DOC, are ASCII file
  29. "books" designed to be read using the included hypertext style file
  30. browser, BOOK.EXE.   To read the documentation type:
  31.  
  32.               BOOK ICONDOS.DOC ...and... BOOK ICONEDIT.DOC

  34. When reading a documentation book:
  35.  
  36. - Use Pg-Up and Pg-Dn keys to move through the document.
  37.  
  38. - Type a page number and press ENTER to jump to a specific page.  Press
  39.   ENTER alone to return to the previous page.
  40.  
  41. - Use Home and End keys to move to the start/end of the document.
  42.  
  43. - Press "A" to align the page boundaries with the screen after scrolling
  44.   with the arrow keys or after searching.

  47. VIEWING ICON LIBRARIES
  48.  
  49. To view the icon library, simply start IconDOS and specify the library
  50. as the menu file like this:

  54. The icons will be displayed for easy viewing on successive pages.

  57. FILE LIST
  58.  
  59. ICONDOS.*   - Main menu program and documentation
  60. ICONEDIT.*  - Icon editor and documentation.
  61. PCX2ICN.*   - Icon screen capture utility and documentation
  62. ICONNUM.EXE - Utility which sequentially numbers the icons in a file by
  63.               overwriting icon titles with numbers.  Useful for icon
  64.               library maintenance.
  65. BOOK.EXE    - Hypertext style file browser for reading ICONDOS.DOC and
  66.               ICONEDIT.DOC.
  67. INSTALL.BAT - Simple batch file to setup a directory on your hard disk
  68.               and copy the necessary IconDOS files to it.
  69. *.MNU       - Example menu files.
  70. RUN.BAT     - Batch file which works with the example menus.  Use this
  71.               file as an example for setting up menus to run your
  72.               applications.
  73. ICON.LBR    - Icon library.  See ICONEDIT.DOC for instructions on
  74.               copying icons from this library to a menu file.
  75. PAPER.ICN   - Wallpaper file.  Contain 36 wallpapers. IconDOS selects a
  76.               wallpaper at random from those available in this file at
  77.               startup unless wallpaper has been fixed (see below).

  80. NOTES and WHATS NEW!!!

  82. Version 1.2 now provides more wallpaper and improved user control over the
  83. wallpaper selection.  The new wallpaper features include:
  84.  
  85. - ALT-W: Changes the current wallpaper display at any time.
  86. - ALT-S: Wallpaper slide show, any key stops the show.
  87. - ALT-F: Fixes the current wallpaper until further notice.
  88. - ALT-R: Changes wallpaper selection to RANDOM mode.

  90. Once a wallpaper is fixed, it remains fixed (even between sessions)
  91. until wallpaper is re-fixed or until random mode is selected.
  92.  
  93. Microsoft's expanded memory manager provided with DOS 5, EMM386.EXE,
  94. will significantly degrade video display performance with IconDOS and
  95. any other video intensive applications.  When added to your CONFIG.SYS
  96. setup, this driver runs your Intel 386 processor in a 'virtual' mode
  97. which results in the loss of display speed.
